What Documents Do You Need to Work Abroad? A Complete Checklist

Introduction

One of the most common reasons Bangladeshi workers face delays or rejections when going abroad is incomplete documentation. Getting your paperwork right from the start saves time, money, and stress. Here is a complete checklist of the documents you'll typically need to work overseas.

1. Valid Passport

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay. Make sure all information is correct and matches your other documents. If your passport is expired or about to expire, renew it first.

2. Work Visa

A work visa is issued by the destination country's embassy or consulate. Your recruiting agency will usually assist with the visa application process. Never travel on a tourist visa intending to work — this is illegal in most countries.

3. Employment Contract

You must have a signed employment contract from your overseas employer before departure. The contract should clearly state your job title, salary, working hours, accommodation, leave entitlements, and contract duration.

4. Medical Fitness Certificate

Most destination countries require a medical fitness certificate from a government-approved medical centre. This confirms you are physically fit to work abroad and free from certain communicable diseases.

5. Police Clearance Certificate

A police clearance certificate (PCC) confirms you have no criminal record. It is issued by the Bangladesh Police and is required by most countries before granting a work visa.

6. National ID Card (NID)

Your National Identity Card is required for most official processes in Bangladesh, including passport applications and BMET registration.

7. BMET Clearance (Smart Card)

All Bangladeshi workers going abroad for employment must register with the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) and obtain a BMET Smart Card. This is a legal requirement and protects your rights as an overseas worker.

8. Pre-Departure Orientation Briefing (PDOB) Certificate

Before departure, you must attend a Pre-Departure Orientation Briefing conducted by BMET. Upon completion, you'll receive a certificate which is required at the airport before boarding.

9. Educational and Professional Certificates

Depending on your job role, you may need to provide educational certificates, trade certificates, or professional qualifications. These may need to be attested or verified.

10. Photographs

Carry multiple passport-sized photographs as they are required for various applications and forms throughout the process.

11. Bank Account Details

You'll need a bank account to receive your salary and send remittances home. Make sure your account is active and you have your account details handy.

12. Emergency Contact Information

Keep a written record of emergency contacts including your family, your recruiting agency, and the Bangladesh embassy in your destination country.
